Common Questions About Boat Bottom Cleaning in Orlando
Does a boat kept in Orlando's freshwater lakes still need bottom paint?
If it stays in the water, usually yes. Freshwater lakes don't grow barnacles the way salt water does, but warm Central Florida water grows algae, slime and other fouling year-round, and growth on the hull costs speed and fuel and can stain gelcoat. Antifouling paint slows that growth, and the type matters for cleaning: ablative paints wear away gradually and need gentle cleaning, while hard paints tolerate firmer scrubbing. Boats kept on a lift or trailer often skip bottom paint. Tell your cleaner which paint you have.
Is buffing and waxing a boat the same as bottom cleaning?
No. Bottom cleaning removes growth from the hull below the waterline, plus the propeller and running gear, usually in the water. Buffing and waxing is topside work above the waterline: compounding oxidized gelcoat and applying wax to restore shine and protect against sun damage, which in Florida's strong sun is a regular need. Pricing for buffing usually depends on the boat's length and how oxidized it is. Many owners schedule both, since a clean bottom and a protected topside each affect how the boat looks and performs.
